The Bureau of Audiovisual and Music Industry Development (BAMID) has announced the Taiwan delegation for the upcoming Texas-based South by Southwest (SXSW) Conference & Festivals in March.
This year, six artists including Taiwanese-American singer Vanness Wu (吳建豪), Beinan singer-songwriter Sangpuy (桑布伊), musician Ruby Fatale (鹿比吠陀), experimental folk band Prairie WWWW (落差草原), rapper PoeTeK (熊仔), and DJ Sonia Calico will represent Taiwan to join SXSW from March 10 through 18.
Sangpuy, who received the Golden Melody Award for Album of the Year in 2017, is one of the most-anticipated Taiwan acts. He will bring more than ten re-composed songs to introduce the beauty of Taiwanese aboriginal music to Austin.
SXSW is an iconic music festival that includes also interactive media, film, creative technologies, and conferences. Established in 1987, the annual event draws numerous artists from all over the world, and has continued to grow in scope every year.
Taiwan began to participate in the festival in 2011. This year, the six artists and bands will present various music genres spanning electro, world music, hip hop, and pop to showcase the diverse music scene of Taiwan. They will also stage a special night at Elysium nightclub under the banner “Taiwan Beats” on March 12.
The performances by Taiwan delegations in previous editions of SXSW had opened to positive reviews. Last year, four artists were discussed and recommended by local media outlets, showing an increase in recognition of Taiwan in Texas.
The BAMID noted that as it will take the approach of cross-industrial strategic alliances this year, it is currently working on connecting resources of different sectors to explore overseas markets and boost international credit for Taiwan products through collaboration.
