Three Taiwanese music acts are gearing up for their live debut at the CMJ Music Marathon, an annual music fest that takes place from Oct. 13 to 17 this year in New York City.
The CMJ Music Marathon is an eclectic city festival featuring bands and artists playing at different clubs and bars throughout New York. It is hailed as a coveted opportunity for new artists to be discovered by industry professionals.
This year, the Ministry of Culture has secured a Taiwan Night at CMJ to showcase Taiwanese rapper Soft Lipa (蛋堡), Latin rap rock band Boxing (拳) and Chinese Canadian pop rock band io.
Soft Lipa is a Tainan-born rapper who stormed local charts with his use of jazz and electro pop. He will be bringing his brand of Taiwanese rap to New York on Oct. 13 (7pm) at S.O.B.'s.
Boxing, a rock band with indigenous Paiwan roots, secured their CMJ entry through popular online vote. The six-guy ensemble produced by Taiwanese diva A-Mei will bring their Paiwan-latin music mix to S.O.B.'s on Oct. 13 (7pm) and the Bowery Electric on Oct. 13 (11.30pm).
Taiwanese acts that have performed at CMJ over the years include songstress A-Lin, rapper Dwagie (大支), rock artist Luantan Ascent (阿翔), and rapper Miss Ko.
