"Nezha,” the repertory of the year by resident artists of the National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, will include 17 plays between Oct. 11 and Dec. 8.
In preparation for the play series, resident performing troupe Contemporary Legend Theatre, stage actors Wu Hsing-kuo (吳興國) and Liu Jaw-yu (劉琢瑜) and Peking opera actresses Wei Hai-min (魏海敏) and Liu Hai-yuan (劉海苑) are coaching young actors and actresses of the ages between 17 and 22.
The feature repertoire "Nezha,” a brand-new production by 20 young actors and actresses, features new stage design, images and costumes. The plot depicts the story of Nezha, a character in Chinese mythology, in his quest of becominga deity. Besides fantastic action, the play also describes the conflict and reconciliation between the young Nezha and his father, making it a play suitable for parents and their children.
To help nurture young actors and actresses, Peking opera masters Wu and Wei will star in one section of "Si Lang VisitsHis Mother,” while the other well-known pair will perform in the final scene with junior actors and actresses.
The Contemporary Legend Theatre has been successful in its repertory projects, drawing more than 16,000 visitors to its 66 plays last year. The performing troupe plays a crucial role in nurturing young Peking opera talents in Taiwan by holding workshops on classic Chinese plays.
