The Bureau of Audiovisual and Music Industry Development (BAMID) has announced the three acts that will represent Taiwan at Midem 2018 in Cannes ― Eve Ai, Cosmos People, and DJ Cookie.
The delegation will also be joined by industry representatives who will travel to France to participate in professional forums, business events, and other activities, while also working to develop opportunities in and around the music business.
The government has sent delegations to Midem since 1995. Each year, to continue developing the market for Mandarin-language pop music in Europe, the Bureau organizes "Taiwan Beats," a highly anticipated night of Taiwanese performances that has attracted the enthusiastic participation of international attendees.
In addition, a Taiwan Pavilion is set up as a hub for the exhibition and export of Taiwanese music, promoting Taiwan's brand image and expanding opportunities for international cooperation.
Last year, for example, over 150 representatives from the music industry participated in business exchanges at the Taiwan Pavilion, with even the French Minister of Culture paying a visit. After the show, the business and cooperation talks have continued.
This year, Taiwan Beats will comprise two shows. The first, on June 7, will be held on Le Majestic Plage, the beach affiliated with Majestic Hotel, a Midem venue. The second will be held two days later, on June 9, at Le Théâtre de Tour Eiffel in Paris.
Among the three acts chosen, Eve Ai received a total of seven nominations at last year’s Golden Melody Awards. She walked away with the award for Best Mandarin Female Singer, a fitting honor after many years of perseverance and hard work in Taiwan's music scene.
Cosmos People, meanwhile, have been a standout from among a new generation of bands. Formed over a decade ago, they specialize in getting crowds hyped with their danceable grooves and have become one of the hottest tickets in Taiwanese music today.
Finally, DJ Cookie is the first female DJ in Taiwan to release an album. Skilled in a diverse range of styles and experienced as a house DJ, she has successfully built an international career and is often invited to perform at major events.
Midem, held in Cannes, is the longest-running international trade show for the music industry. Bringing together the top figures in the industry and the media, it is a bustle of rights deals, shows, and forums.
