The Taipei Branch of the National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute (NTCRI), Taipei’s premiere crafts center, was inaugurated on Dec. 23 by Culture Minister Hung Meng-chi (洪孟啟), Vice Premier Simon San-cheng Chang (張善政), and NTCRI Director Hsu Keng-hsiu (許耿修).
The monument once housed the National Taiwan Science Education Center, an important subsidiary of the Ministry of Education that is tasked with promoting science education in Taiwan. The Vice Premier (left) noted that it will now pass the torch of crafts education in the years to come.
The Culture Minister (center) added that many people of his generation still carry fond memories of the science center. He expressed his belief that the renovated historic building will continue playing an important role in people's memories in its new capacity as a crafts center.
Encompassing four core prospects – craftsmanship, culturally creative goods, design, and culture – the NTCRI Taipei Branch will serve both as a seller and producer of crafts.
Local handicraft manufacturers are welcomed to open shop at the renovated monument, and workshops will be stationed with young craft artists under a residency program.
The NTCRI Taipei Branch will also complement the existing arts and cultural facilities along Nanhai Road, strengthening the position of the region touted as "Nanhai Academy" for cultural leisure and tourism.
