Founded in 2000, the Institute of Sociology (IOS) was originally one of the four divisions of the Institute of Social Sciences of the Academia Sinica. The IOS’s establishment as a separate body took close to half a century to realize.
The Institute’s fundamental mission is to accumulate and expand on sociological knowledge by studying the organizing principles, operational processes, and historical changes of society. The IOS focuses on the formation, operation, and development of both Taiwan and that of neighboring societies and Chinese communities at large.
The Institute’s six areas of work include: Taiwan and indigenous research to define the identity of Taiwanese sociology; research on the interactions and comparisons between Taiwan and neighboring regions; cross-national research; systematization of existing research; development of new research agenda; and the cultivation of the sociology profession.
