Taiwanese celebrities including death metal band CHTHONIC (閃靈樂團), singer Landy Wen (溫嵐), and DJ MKP teamed up on Oct. 14 to announce the nominees of the 2014 Golden Indie Music Awards and to rally support for Taiwan’s songwriters and music producers.

Now entering its fifth year, the Golden Indie Awards was established to recognize artists who write and produce their own music. Only albums that carry 70 percent of original work by the artist can quality for nomination, a criteria that separates it from the Golden Melody Awards, Taiwan’s star-studded music gala that mostly honors commercially released music.

Kaohsiung-based, bass-driven Taiwanese band Elephant Gym (大象體操) led the pack with eight nominations, including best album, best band, best rock single, best jazz single, album with the best style, and single with the best style. Two of its three members — bassist Tif Chang and drummer Tu Chia-chin — were also nominated in the best musician category.

Also in contention for best album are Chang Chen-yue's "I Am Ayal Komod" (張震嶽/我是海雅谷慕), Wakin Chau's "Jiang Hu" (周華健/江湖), Dwagie's "Refuse to Listen" (大支/不聽), and Yujun Wang & the Time Band's "Abandoned Garden" (王榆鈞與時間樂隊/頹圮花園).

Alternative rock band Guntzepaula's album "Huozhong" (槍擊潑辣/惑众) has garnered the second-highest number of nominations in six categories, followed by Dwagie's "Refuse to Listen" and Simhanada's "1/84000" (師子吼/八萬四千分之一), each with five nominations.

The jury award will go to Ayugo Huang's "Shan Ge Yi Tiao Lu" (黃連煜/山歌一條路) while the outstanding contribution award will be presented to 59-year-old Taiwanese musician and music producer Lee Shou-chuan (李壽全).

The Bureau of Audiovisual and Music Industry Development, organizer of the awards, said that in celebration of the record-breaking 1,610 submissions this year, another mysterious guest will join CHTHONIC and Landy Wen at the awards ceremony in New Taipei’s Xinzhuang District on Dec. 6.
