The Taichung City Council passed a resolution on March 12 dictating that an opera house under construction will be given to the central government to be managed by the Ministry of Culture.

Culture Minister Lung Ying-tai welcomed Taichung City’s decision to donate the Taichung Metropolitan Opera House, which is due to be completed by the end of 2014, saying that the move has helped to strengthen Taiwan’s arts and cultural infrastructure.

The opera house, to be renamed Taichung National Opera House, will become part the Ministry’s National Center for Performing Arts, which is scheduled to be formally inaugurated in April.

The opera house in central Taiwan, along with the National Theater and Concert Hall in northern Taiwan and the Wei-Wu-Ying Center for the Arts in southern Taiwan, will help usher forth a new era for Taiwan’s performing arts.
