In a new year address on the nation’s vision and development strategy for the audiovisual sector, Culture Minister Lung Ying-tai summarized the updated film, television, and pop music policies of the Ministry of Culture on Jan. 22.
The Ministry’s policies for the film, television, and pop music industries aim to assist local businesses in integrating various resources such as creativity and marketing, Lung said in a speech at the Kuomintang’s Central Standing Committee meeting, adding that an appropriate investment could increase the economic value of the entire cultural industry chain.
The analysis focused on how Taiwan’s film, television, and music industries, which already have considerable cultural significance, can become trend-setters and evolve into competitive cultural brands in the global marketplace of the digital era.
“Taiwanese movies have flourished in a tremendous way,” stated the Minister. Statistics show that the Taiwanese movie-viewing population has reached 5.85 million, with a box office totaling NT$1.405 billion in 2013. This marks a considerable increase from 2012 figures, namely 3.61 million viewers and NT$1.07 billion in box office numbers.
After Lung’s speech, President Ma Ying-jeou, in his capacity as Chairman of the Kuomintang, recommended the Ministry to continue cooperating with other government departments in an effort to inject more capital and creative power from the private sector into Taiwan’s cultural sector. The overall vision is to assist its entry into the international market.
Citing the enduring pop song “Olive Tree” by the renowned late composer Lee Tai-hsiang and the blockbuster documentary film “Beyond Beauty” as examples, President Ma lauded Taiwan’s free society for its ability to inspire ideas and originality.
